Gwaing Beach is just outside George Central. It’s about 15 Km out of George, if you drive from the middle of town. To get there, you drive through Pacaltsdorp, past the police station onto a gravel road. Keep driving straight until you find the Le Grand Estate turnoff. Keep straight on that road it will lead you right to the beach.
It is most definitely worth trying out! It is a very beautiful beach with a stunning low river mouth that connects to the beach. The beach side has lots of picnic spots with braai facilities. There are tidy bathroom facilities as well as cold showers to rinse off the sand afterwards. If you follow the stairs next to the bathrooms, you will find more picnic spots with braai facilities that have a great view of the whole beach and lovely trees for shade.
This beach has two sections, the beach side and the river side which gives you the beast of both worlds! There are high cliffs surrounding the beach with caves making it even more spectacular. On the beach side, there is a ramp for wheelchairs to get on to the beach as well! There are no lifeguards on this beach because it is quite safe, but please stay cautious and be safe. Unfortunately no dogs are aloud because of the wildlife.
On the river side, there is also picnic spots with braai facilities to enjoy next to the water. There is plenty of shade and has a nice surrounding. The water on a nice day is crystal clear and as blue as the sky! Some days the water is a dark brown colour (Usually after it rains) Either way its always a beautiful place to spend the day.
Gwaing Beach in George is a place for everyone to enjoy, and is also a natural environment so please keep it clean.
