George Arts Theatre in George was built in 1905 as the first girls' school. In 1968 it was bought by the George Society of Arts and converted into a theatre, the first production held in April 1969.

Social evenings are often held on a regular basis and consist of play readings, music and dance excerpts, quizzes, story telling and many other theatre related items. A number of full length productions are held throughout the year and every other December the Society’s pantomime is one of the town’s most popular holiday attractions. The Arts Theatre is also a popular venue for many productions given by both national and international artists

Jeroen Kranenburg visits our stage this week will be visiting us on Saturday 21 May at 8pm with his show "Work is the Curse of the drinking classes".

"Oscar Wilde is one of us. His wit is an agent for renewal, as pertinent now as a hundred years ago. The questions posed by both his art and his life lend his art a quality of earnestness, an earnestness which he always disavowed.

This entertainment devised and performed by Jeroen Kranenburg pays tribute to Wilde’s critical sense, his wide and deep learning, and his profound humanity. The show also focuses on the cynicism with which friends cut him off at his fall; on literature, art and life in the 1890’s; his remarkable tour of America in 1882, and his subsequent success as a poet, journalist, critic and dramatist in London.

This production premiered in February 1986 at the Stalhouderij Theatre in Amsterdam. Since then, it has successfully toured to Berlin, New York, London, Market Theatre, Grahamstown National Arts Festival (1991 & 2003), Port Elizabeth, Hogsback, Witness Arts Festival, Olympia Café, Mount Nelson Hotel and Obz Café."

Something is amis in a small town when a minister makes the short list as candidate for a church, but the final qualifying criteria is that he must be married.
The Reverend Loveday arrives in the town and immediately sets out to leap this last hurdle in his application by pursuing three elligble, but spoken for, ladies.

Their suitors, however, are not necessarily willing to stand aside for a man of the cloth, and some high jinx is the order of the day.
Come and see Reverend on Appro from the 26-28 May.

Black & White Dogs honour one of the greatest Rock bands of all time, LED ZEPPELIN

"Black & White Dogs"

The Black & White Dogs are a Rock band based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Formed in January 2012, the band model themselves on a late 60’s and 70’s rock sound and feel.

It isn't just the bands foot stompin’ beat, wailing vocals reminiscent of Led zeppelin’s Robert Plant, rip roaring guitar solos with a Jimi Hendrix flair and feel, groovy and solid bass lines and solid rock drumming. Or even the fact that the band has a unique but still good old classic rock sound. It is the band's finesse.

Like their influences Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Cream and Van Halen, just to mention a few; who used a guitar and vocal style that drew heavily on the blues, which embodies raw passion and heartfelt expression. This blessed the group with a unique understanding of rock as sculptured sound; never wanting to stray from their roots, this band is all about expression, entertaining and playing real rock n’ roll music!

As you may have gathered by now, Black & White Dogs draw their influences and sound heavily from classic rock bands, with the members being experienced musicians who have been performing on the South African music scene for a number of years, playing rock, blues and various other genres, it didn’t take long for these few passionate and rock n’ roll loving musicians to click…. And when they did, wow did it explode!

To any fan of classic rock or rock fans overall, Black & White Dogs will remind you of why you love that music so much and will entertain the hell out you at their live shows!

Come rock with Black & White Dogs to the beat of the legendary Led Zeppelin. One show only! Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre on 13 September 2014 at 19:30. Tickets are only R90 so book NOW on Computicket or at the theatre on 044 874 3142.

Don’t miss the magnificent musical talents of the Hinds Bros! As part of their Cape Tour 2011, these extraordinary musicians will perform one show only at the George Arts Theatre on Saturday 27 September 2014 at 20:00.

Brothers Aden and Wren Hinds, both singer/songwriters, unite to form an incomparable duo. Music literally runs in their veins. Their father Kevin Hinds was a recording singer/songwriter with EMI in the early 70s and went on to perform extensively to audiences throughout the country. Their older brother Craig Hinds of Watershed, is one of the country’s premier musicians.

Although inspired and influenced by the artists of The Great Musical Renaissance of the 60s and 70s, the brothers have evolved a style uniquely and undeniably their own. Acoustically driven, their songwriting is insightful, lyrical and melodic, while their voices blend into an unmistakable harmony. These qualities, perfectly complimented by voices of great originality and beauty, make live performances by these young musicians an intimate, dynamic and unforgettable experience. They make music for everyone, which is thoughtful, melodic, playful and vibrant. Imbued with such talent, both as vocalists and writers of songs, Hinds Brothers are destined to leave their indelible mark on the musical landscape. They are currently recording their debut album, and have an acoustic EP "The Acoustic Session" out.

Tickets are only R60. Book your seat now at the Arts Theatre on 044 874 3142 to join the journey into the magical musical landscape that is the Hinds Bros.
