Santos Beach, one of South Africa’s prestigious Blue Flag beaches, is situated in the heart of Mossel Bay, a charming town on the south coast of the Western Cape. This wide, sandy beach offers stunning ocean views and convenient access to the town’s shops, restaurants, and historic sites.
Earning its Blue Flag status for strict water quality control, environmental education efforts, sound environmental management, and safety record, Santos Beach stands out as a prime destination.
The beach is a popular swimming spot, with sea temperatures ranging from a comfortable 20 to 22°C during the summer months (November to March) and 13 to 14°C in winter (May to September). Lifeguards are on duty from November to January.
Santos Beach is also a favored launch site for paddle-skis and offers a variety of water sports, including surfing, boating, diving, and angling. The rocky outcrops along the beach are home to rock pools filled with fascinating sea creatures and oyster beds.

Mossel Bay, just a short distance from the beach, is renowned as the historical capital of the Garden Route. It is here that some of the continent’s earliest inhabitants set their Stone-Age fish traps and where 15th-century Portuguese navigator Bartolomeu Dias landed after rounding the southern tip of Africa in search of a sea route to Asia.
Proud of its Blue Flag status, Santos Beach enhances Mossel Bay’s reputation as one of South Africa’s favorite holiday destinations, joining 34 other esteemed Blue Flag beaches across the country.
