The Outeniqua Power Van is a motorised rail bus that runs between George and the Montagu pass. It departs from the Outeniqua Transport Museum, and travels through the lush vegetation of the Outeniqua Mountains to the top of the Montagu Pass along the railway line constructed between George and Oudtshoorn at the turn of the century. The Power Van journey ascends through the lush vegetation of the Witfontein Forest including many varieties of Proteas, indigenous trees (such as Forest Elder, Stinkwoods, Yellowwoods and the Cape Beech), fynbos and forest ferns.
The journey passes through steep rock faces covered with ferns, mosses and mountain flowers. Views along the way include a bird eye’s view of George against the backdrop of the Indian ocean and mountain views such as the magnificent 1357m George Peak and 1578m Cradock Peak. At times the Power Van travels parallel to the historic Montagu pass, constructed in 1844. The pass was declared a national monument in 1972, but still remains open to the public. Natural encounters include a variety of birds and wild life.
