Where

Read Information :

  • Parking: There is ample parking near the beach, making it convenient for visitors who are driving. Parking areas are close enough to provide easy access to the sand.
  • Pathways: There are pathways leading from the parking areas to the beach, but some areas may have sandy or uneven terrain, which could be challenging for those with mobility limitations.
  • Restroom Facilities: Public restrooms are available nearby, but it’s a good idea to check their condition before visiting, as facilities vary in upkeep.
  • Stair Access: In some areas, access to the beach may involve stairs, which could limit accessibility for individuals using wheelchairs or strollers.
  • Beach Wheelchair Access: Currently, Outeniqua Beach does not have specialized beach wheelchairs or accessible boardwalks for easy wheelchair access to the sand and water, which can be a limitation for those with mobility needs.
  • Nearby Amenities: Groot Brak Rivier has a few nearby shops and cafes where visitors can grab refreshments or beach supplies, enhancing the convenience for families and tourists.Leash Requirements: Dogs are typically required to be on a leash, especially during peak times or in busier sections of the beach, to ensure the safety and comfort of all beachgoers.
  • Cleaning Up: Owners are expected to clean up after their pets to keep the beach clean and enjoyable for everyone.
  • Quiet Times and Off-Peak Hours: Visiting during quieter times, such as early mornings or evenings, can provide a more relaxed experience for dogs, especially those who enjoy more freedom or feel anxious in busy areas.
  • Nearby Freshwater Access: Make sure to bring water for your dog, as there may not be easy access to freshwater for them to drink.

    Braaing:

    • While there aren’t designated braai facilities on the beach itself, many beachgoers bring portable braais or set up nearby if conditions allow.
    • It’s best to check local regulations, as some beaches may restrict open fires to ensure environmental protection and prevent wildfires.
    • Nearby picnic spots often allow for braaing, so you could look for a designated picnic area close to the beach if you’re planning a full setup.

    Fishing:

    • Outeniqua Beach is a fantastic spot for recreational fishing, attracting anglers who enjoy surf fishing.
    • The beach offers a variety of fish species, including kob, shad (elf), and blacktail, especially during certain seasons.
    • Be sure to have a fishing permit, as required by South African law. Permits are available at local post offices or online.
    • It’s a good idea to check local fishing regulations for any seasonal restrictions or catch limits.

This makes Outeniqua Beach a great spot for those looking to enjoy both a day of fishing and a seaside braai!

    About Outeniqua Beach

The coastline of the Garden Route is dramatic and raw, with massive sandy beaches and the wild waves of the Indian Ocean crashing on the sands. Outeniqua Beach (also commonly known as Outeniqua Strand) is one of these scenic beaches and is perched on the sandy stretch between Mossel Bay and George.

The entire length of the beach spans some six kilometres, which is divided into four separate swimming areas. The waters are relatively warm, making it a great choice for families that want a beach holiday without tackling icy sea water. It is ideal for kite-surfing during the summer months. Spectators get to enjoy the antics of dolphins and seals all year round as they play in the surf or peek out inquisitively. Every year, between July and December, southern right and humpback whales entertain their spectators, who stand on the shore or look on from whale-watching boats, with impressive displays of their size and agility. Occasionally, orcas join the mix too.

There is plenty of parking available to visitors, as well as a number of different entry points to the beach itself. Ablutions are available for the convenience of visitors.

Outeniqua Beach is only about 10 kilometres from the George Airport, 14 kilometres from the internationally-acclaimed Fancourt Golf Estate, an hour from Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves, and around five hours from Cape Town and its international airport.

Pack a picnic, bring a good book, and relax on the Outeniqua Beach’s soft sands for the ultimate in the kind of tranquillity that only comes from fresh air and sunshine.
