The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus, or simply known as just Doctor Faustus, is an Elizabethan tragedy written by Christopher Marlowe.

Based on early German tales about the character, Faust, it was first performed some time between 1588 and Marlowe's untimely death in 1593.

Doctor Faustus, a revered German scholar grows weary of the fields of law, logic, medicine and religion and becomes increasingly dissatisfied with their limitations.
This prompts him into deciding to pursue the study of necromancy.

With the help of two friends who instruct him, Faustus masters the art and starts his new career by summoning up a demon, Mephastophilis.

In spite of being warned about the horrors of the underworld, Faustus sends Mephastophilis back to his master, Lucifer, with the offer to sell his soul to the devil in exchange for twenty-four years of service from Mephostophilis.

Lucifer agrees, and Faustus, despite a few clear moments of reservation, embarks on many travels and begins to utilize his newfound powers. As his power grows, so too does his pride and as twenty-four years draw to a close, he attempts to repent. Unfortunately, for Faustus (often compared to the figure of Icarus) it is too late.
