The better the surface, the better the result.

Even new surfaces can have nail holes, scuff marks, scrapes and grazes. Plus once the paint is on, they are often more noticeable and harder to remove.

Filling small holes is as simple as taking a filling knife and smoothing some Emblem interior/exterior crack filler over the hole or the scrape. It is necessary to prime areas that has been filled with Emblem Plaster Primer, Universal Undercoat or Bonding Liquid.[

Remember to look for mould especially in bathrooms, toilets and kitchens and treat that with an anti-mould solution before painting.

Double check in the corners of bathrooms, toilets and kitchens – steam and water collecting near these wall junctions can cause the paint to become weaker and more prone to flaking.

If you are painting bare wood, make sure to use Emblem wood primer before painting or apply Emblem Varnish to keep the wood feel.

If you are painting new plaster, make sure to use Emblem Plaster Primer before painting.

Scrape flaking paint with a scraper. Any flaking paint means the new paint won’t be able to bind to the wall – and you’ll end up with the new paint flaking.

Once you’ve removed all the flaking paint – smooth the edges with a medium grit sandpaper. With some surfaces, you’ll need to scrape the entire area. Whether you use an electric stripper, or paint remover and a blade, read the instructions carefully before beginning.

Once you’ve cleaned it, sand it and then dust it clean.
As a final step, wash the whole surface with sugar soap.

Prepare your windows by adding a strip of masking tape along the edges. This helps you paint the frames without getting paint on the glass. Similarly, masking tape on door handles and brass fittings can make the painting a lot faster and less frustrating.If you’ve gone and bought some beautiful paint, then you’ll want to invest in the best brushes and rollers, too. Make sure you buy the right roller for the paint that you are using.

Does it need a primer?
A primer is a first coat of paint that seals porous surfaces. It gives the new paint something to adhere to, and makes the topcoats easier to apply. If the surface is new, you’ll need a primer. If the surface is being repainted, as long as there are no bare patches, flaking paint, imperfections and stains the old paint can work well as an undercoat (ask your local paint shop if the paint you are buying is compatible with the paint that is on your wall).
Make sure surfaces are well prepared by remove any grease, flaking paint and dirt. Remember that smoke and water stains have to be treated with a proper primer before applying your finishing coat.

How to choose the correct paint.
There are two basic types of paint – water-based and oil-based. Water based types are available in Trade Matt, Smooth Matt, Ultra Smooth Matt, Low Sheen and Satin Sheen, Texture Coat, Stormguard and Roof Paint. Water-based paints are usually used for ceilings, interior and exterior walls and roofs. They spread faster, dry quicker and brushes and rollers are easier to clean. Enamel paints (also solvent based) are particularly tough. The finish is tougher and can be easier to clean. Enamel based paints are available in Economy gloss, High gloss, Eggshell, Non Drip enamel, Quick Dry Enamel and Stoep Paint Enamel. They can be used on walls, floors, Steel structures and woodwork – doors, window frames, handrails and furniture.
