CROCODILE ON THE LOOSE BONNIEVALE WESTERN CAPE

A number of crocodiles have escaped from a commercial farm near Bonnievale in the Western Cape on Wednesday 3 March, with authorities and environmental departments hard at work to recapture them.

The crocodiles managed to break free from their holding camps in the morning, and despite some 25 crocs having been recovered and safely returned to the farm, various law enforcement agencies will continue to patrol parts of the Breederiver near the farm to ensure that the “unknown number” of escaped animals are also rounded up.

Sedgefield becomes Africa’s first ’slow town’

The Southern Cape town of Sedgefield has become Africa’s first “slow town.”

The international Cittaslow movement promotes quality living. It originated in Italy about ten years ago.

There are now nearly 100 Cittaslow towns worldwide in countries like Australia, Germany and Canada.

The SA Slowtown Movement’s André Gauche said the town’s population may not exceed 50,000.

“We have no heavy industry here, we look after the environment, we’ve got a very militant environmental side of our community that really looks after the environment,” he said

On Friday 3 September 2010 the Proteas Cricket Team was 'treated' to a Trail Run in the Goukama Nature Reserve organized by the brother team Mark and John Collins of Magnetic South. The Team was divided in groups and had to use a gps and map to find waypoints along the way while facing some serious sand, long uphills and the odd snake threat.

In the interviews Graham Smith, Mark Boucher, Jacques Kallis and many of the other players said that Trail Running is one of the most exciting and challenging forms of getting that body and mind in shape.

THE price of tomatoes and potatoes, which have already doubled this winter, could rise further in the coming months due to the impact of severe weather on crops, farmers’ union TAU SA said yesterday.

Limpopo had already experienced two cold fronts which caused a 100% income loss on tomatoes and a 50% income loss on potatoes, the union’s northern chairman Jan Viljoen said.

Other crops affected were bananas, with a 30% income loss, and pumpkins with a 50% loss. “Consumers can expect poor quality crops this season.”

A breaching whale has crash-landed on a sailboat in Table Bay, narrowly missing the vessel’’s occupants and leaving in its wake bits of blubber and thick skin.

This picture shows the southern right whale seconds before its massive body landed on the coach roof of the boat, flattening the steel mast and bringing down the rigging before sliding back into the water and disappearing into the distance.

“It was quite scary,” said Paloma Werner, who had been out sailing with her boyfriend and business partner, Ralph Mothes, of the Cape Town Sailing Academy.

Johannesburg – It will take another 10 days to repair the damaged parts of the Seacom data cable, lying nearly 5km deep off Africa's east coast.

The weather, the depth of the fault and the parts needed are all delaying the repair process, said Seacom. July 22 was the earliest date by which repairs could be completed.

The undersea cable has been out of operation since Monday July 5, and has been disrupting international internet operations.

Our leftover medicines are spawning drug-resistant "bacterial monsters" that thrive inside sharks, scientists say.

The finding suggests antibiotics such as penicillin may be leaching into the environment and spurring drug-resistant bacteria to evolve and multiply in the oceans.

(See: "Drug-Resistant Bacteria Found in Wild Arctic Birds.")

"Bacteria have sex, basically. They can transfer genetic material," said study leader Mark Mitchell, professor of veterinary clinical medicine at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
