A child, aged about 8-years-old, drowned in the Knysna lagoon on Sunday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Just before 17:00, the NSRI received a report that a stand-up paddle boarder had found a child floating face down in the lagoon, NSRI Knysna station commander Graeme Harding said in a statement.

The paddle boarder recovered the body and tried to resuscitate the little girl.

She was transferred to a passing rubber duck, which rushed her to the shore.

A doctor performed cardio pulmonary resuscitation and the child was rushed to hospital, where further attempts to resuscitate her were made.

The child was later declared dead.

"Initially there was no sign of family or any people seeming to be associated to the child in the vicinity and the child remained unidentified...," Harding said.

Later some people told the police that they were with the child and thought she was swimming.

"Their relationship to the child and their account of the events is being investigated by police."
