St Blaize Hiking Trail Mossel Bay

The Starting Point is at Bat's Cave and ends in Dana Bay. The distance is 15 km one way. The duration 4 hrs. Rating is average, high cliffs on one side. No permit needed, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
Cape St Blaize Hiking Trail features coastal views with towering cliffs and rocks and a number of bays and coves.

The Maritime Museum Mossel Bay

The building as originally erected in 1901 to serve as a grain and sawmill. It has now been adapted to serve as a unique Maritime Museum. A life-sized replica of Bartolomeu Dias’s caravel is on display together with all aspects of the maritime history of the early Portuguese, Dutch and English navigators.

The Cape St Blaize Cave Mossel Bay

People have long since found shelter in this cave: Artefacts found here date back eighty thousand years.Also known as Bat's Cave this name was given by occupation of the area when thousands of bats still lived there.The roof of the Cave is over 10m high, it is 12m deep and 22 metres wide at its mouth. This is a superb lookout point.

In the Mossel Bay area the most popular surfing sports are at Cape Saint Blaize and Die Bakkie. Situated at the Point, Inner Pool is the playground for most locals. It has a great peeling, consistent top-to-bottom wave, or hotdog wave, which means you can pull about any saucy maneuver on it.

The Shell Museum

This structure was erected in 1902. The building was also used as a furniture factory and garage for motor repairs. The building is still in a very good state of repair and the solid wooden pillars render a special atmosphere to this edifice.
On the lower level the “touch tank” and aquarium enables visitors and school groups to actively learn about sea life and the creatures along South Africa’s shoreline. A “man and mollusc” exhibition portrays the history of the use of shells by man.

Starting point: A stile next to a green gate opposite the picnic table in Robinson Pass.
End: The top of the Robinson Pass or back at the start.
Distance / Duration: 16,5 km / 7 hours.
Rating: Average.
Permit: None. Features include fynbos and small animals. Beautiful river trail with rich birdlife. Stunning coastal scenery, whale and dolphin watching.

St Blaize Lighthouse Mossel Bay

St Blaize Lighthouse Mossel Bay is open for tours throughout the year. 10:00am to 3:00pm The use of light beacons or fires to guide ships dates back to 600 BC. Fires were used on Robben Island before Greenpoint Lighthouse was erected in 1824. St Blaize lighthouse was commissioned in l864. Today all lighthouses along the coasts of South Africa are fully automated, except for only two manned lighthouses, of which St Blaize is one, still operating at dangerous spots.

Mossel Bay Harbour

Mossel Bay Harbour is situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth and is the smallest of the commercial harbours along the South African coast. Today Mossel Bay is an active harbour catering for the local fishing industry. An increasing number of ships for the emerging oil industry call at Mossel Bay. In keeping with this industry a full diving service is available for underwater inspection, hull cleaning, salvage etc.
